Powder X-ray diffraction at variable temperature

Powder X-ray diffraction allows the structural study of species that do not yield single crystals. This technique is particularly useful in the study of polycrystalline substances, liquid crystals, polymer films, fibres, Langmuir-Blodgett films, amorphous solids, liquids, etc. In our laboratory, the diffraction patterns can be registered with two kind of experimental set-up:

  • Guinier diffractometer (Huber 644): This apparatus gives a graphical view of the reflections registered by a computer-controlled NaI scintillation detector. The areas under the signals are proportional to the reflection intensities. This set-up uses a linear Cu-Ka1 beam issued from a germanium monochromator.
  • Pinhole camera (Anton-Paar): The pattern is registered on flat photographic film, and the reflection intensities are given by the relative blackening observed on the film. This set-up uses a Ni-filtered point-focused Cu-Ka beam, and the sample-to-film distance can be changed following the angular region to explore. In both equipments the samples are held in Lindemann glass capilaries of about 1 mm diameter, although some samples can also been studied on a flat holder Langmuir-Blodgett films) or without any holder at all (polymer films, fibres). One of the most important features of both equipments is the possibility of heating the samples at controlled temperatures by means of a variable-temperature attachment that operates between room temperature and, at least, 250oC.
